當我們以英文書寫時，可能不時會遇到「年齡問題」(the “year-old” problem) 。今次《「語」您講》將會探討不同表達年齡的方式及文法，並會討論連字號 (hyphen) 的正確運用方法。
“Simon turns 21 today.” （「Simon 今天剛剛滿 21 歲。」）
How old is Simon? （Simon 多少歲？）
✅ He is 21.
✅ He is 21 years old.
❌ He is 21-years-old.
當講述一個人（即 Simon）或一件物件的年齡時，我們並不會使用連字號。換言之，如年齡放在名詞後便不會被寫成「year-old」。
“His 28-year-old brother, James, gave him a ten-year-old bottle of whiskey as a gift.” （「Simon 28 歲的哥哥 James 送了一支 10 年威士忌給他慶祝生日。」）
這句句子中的「28 歲」和「10 年」成為了形容詞，分別形容「Simon 的哥哥 James」和「威士忌」的年齡／酒齡。因此，當年齡放在名詞前或當年齡被用作形容詞時便要使用連字號。
我們現在嘗試運用連字號以表達 Simon 的歲數：
✅ He is a 21-year-old boy. （Simon 是個 21 歲的男子。）
✅ He is a 21-year-old. （Simon 是個 21 歲的人。）
❌ He is 21-year-old.
❌ He is 21-years-old.
注意！當運用「-year-old」來描述年齡時，我們並不會寫「years」(即年的複數）！
現在，我們再看看一樣是正確的「He is a 21-year-old.」。
當年齡被用作名詞時便要使用連字號。以 Simon 28 歲的哥哥 James 再作舉倒，我們亦可把他寫成「a 28-year-old」。
“Simon goes out with his friends to a party that is full of 21-year-olds.” （「Simon 和友人外出參與一個全都是 21 歲年輕人的派對。」）
如上所述，當年齡被用作名詞時便要使用連字號。這句句子中的「21-year-olds」所指的是一群「21 歲年輕人」，所以我們需要將「a 21-year-old」寫成複數「21-year-olds」。
解決「年齡問題」的其他方法
以下是一些常用的表達年齡的方式：
✅ The party is for people aged 21. （這個派對是為 21 歲的人而設的。）
✅ The party is for people aged 21 years. （同上）
❌ The party is for people aged 21 years old.
「Aged」與數字連用解作「⋯⋯歲的」，所以並不需要再加上「old」一字。
✅ Simon is in his early 20s. （Simon 現在二十多歲。）
❌ Simon is in his early 20’s.
在描述大概曆年歲數時，我們並不用在數字及「s」中加上撇號。
同樣地，當描述年代時亦不需加撇號：
✅ Simon was born in the 2000s. （Simon 在千禧年代出生。）
❌ Simon was born in the 2000’s.

總結：「Years old」還是「year-old」？
總括而言，決定是否在「year old」（及其他如「week old」和「minute old」）中加上連字號 (hyphen) 取決於年齡相對於名詞的擺放位置。
當年齡放在名詞後，便不需使用連字號（即「year old」或「years old」）：
✅ The baby is two months old. （這個嬰兒現在兩個月大。）
❌ The baby is two-month-old.
當年齡作為形容詞放在名詞前，便要運用連字號（即「year-old」）：
✅ An 800-year-old castle. （一座 800 年歷史的城堡。）
❌ An 800 years old castle.
當年齡作為名詞時，便要運用連字號（即「year-old」）：
✅ He is lying on the floor like a three-year-old. （他尤如三歲小孩般躺在地上。）
❌ He is lying on the floor like a three years old.
